Victoria Justice Opens Up About Online Backlash and Death Threats Over Viral Ariana Grande Meme
Victoria Justice is shedding light on the unexpected and intense backlash she faced after a years-old interview clip went viral, leading to widespread online hate — and even death threats.
During a recent appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, the Victorious star addressed the infamous meme that stemmed from a 2010 interview alongside co-stars Ariana Grande, Elizabeth Gillies, and Daniella Monet. In the clip, originally released by Popstar! and recirculated online in 2017, the cast discussed each other’s quirks. When Gillies complimented Grande’s tendency to sing constantly, Justice interjected with, “I think we all sing” — a moment that social media users interpreted as shade toward Grande.

Reflecting on the fallout, Justice said, “There was a period where it genuinely felt like the internet just hated me. The mob mentality is real, and online spaces can be incredibly harsh.”
The actress explained that the moment was blown out of proportion. “First of all, it was just a fact — we all sang. That’s literally what happened,” she said. “The media twisted it into something it wasn’t. I was in my twenties when that clip resurfaced, and it was from when I was a teenager.”
Justice revealed that the online hate escalated to disturbing levels. “I got so much hate. People were sending death threats. It was insane,” she shared. “My mom was reading everything and freaking out. I tried to stay calm, but it really snowballed.”
Despite the negativity, Justice now looks back on the viral moment with a sense of humor. “At this point, I just think it’s funny. I’m in on the joke now. I even make fun of it myself.”

Victorious, which aired from 2010 to 2013 on Nickelodeon, followed the life of Tori Vega, played by Justice, as she pursued her dreams at a performing arts high school. The show helped launch the careers of several cast members — but for Justice, one offhand comment became an internet phenomenon with real-world consequences.
